The university UPC and the ESADE school of business have joined forces with the Catalan Institute for Energy Research (IREC), Gas Natural Fenosa, and the Catalan members of KIC InnoEnergy, to implement in Barcelona the largest sustainable energy research, education and innovation network in Europe, promoted by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

KIC InnoEnergy, a company created by the EIT, centres its business on sustainable energy. Its mission is to stimulate innovation in this field, by proposing a sustainable energy concept that improves impact on the climate change and includes the entire “energy mix”, taking in current and future concepts of technology such as those listed below:
- Renewable energies (wind, solar –including photovoltaic and heat– and marine);
- Smart energy and energy storage networks;
- Energy efficiency;
- Biomass and fossil fuel;
- Clean coal technologies;
- Sustainable nuclear energy and its convergence with renewable energies.
Barcelona is the headquarters of the Iberia node, which will be coordinating the renewable energies projects. Nevertheless, all the projects will have a cross node dimension, bringing together the leading experts from Europe in a given theme and promoting the collaboration of organisations from different countries.
