The Esther Koplowitz Centre is the new building where researchers from the Hospital Clínic, the UB Faculty of Medicine, and the CSIC’s Biomedical Research Institute, which join forces within the framework of IDIBAPS and the CRESIB, can develop all their potential. Building work on the centre began in 2008 and was completed in 2010.
Vicente Arroyo, director of the Esther Koplowitz Centre.
The project was initiated in the year 2005 with the donation of 15 million euros by the Esther Koplowitz Foundation (FEK) to Barcelona’s Hospital Clínic, through its Clínic Foundation. This donation, assigned to the construction of the building, is one of the most important research sponsorships seen in Spain. The building represented a total investment of over 60 million euros.
The Centre promotes a modern conception of biomedical research which links basic and clinical research together in a competitive way. Its proximity to the Hospital Clínic makes it an ideal institution for translational, transfer and competitive research with regard to a broad range of pathologies.
This project was made possible thanks to the support of the Catalan Government, the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Carlos III Health Institute and the UB. In an example of public-private sector collaboration, in addition to FEK, it has had support from other sponsors such as the Cellex Private Foundation, Sardà Farriol Action for Research in Diabetes and Laboratoris Esteve.
