The PEMB has been the fundamental tool for Barcelona’s metropolitan development. When the AMB had not yet been incorporated, it served to guide actions with a supra-municipal vision that addressed a regional, economic and social reality that went beyond the administrative limits of the various town councils. Subsequently, the PEMB has become the central axis of the policies promoted by the AMB as a constituted administration. The PEMB made progress in a direction which has reached a point of no return today. We have relied on the collaboration of all the political, economic and social players of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona to define strategies and guide joint actions.
Now more than ever, the AMB requires a tool that allows it to set short-, medium- and long-term objectives, always based on the consensus of all the municipalities involved, the broader the better. Metropolitan areas are called upon to have more importance and prominence when it comes to defining public policies on topics that have a direct impact on people. Housing is a prime example of this. The metropolitan vision of policies will gradually take over and a new strategic plan is thus necessary. Based on consensus, the plan will help us to define our challenges and objectives for the future.
